Overview
Kling AI by Kuaishou is the strongest competitor to Runway and currently leads on character consistency across clips. It supports text-to-video and image-to-video workflows, produces 1080p video, and has a generous free tier. Particularly strong for cinematic, realistic human motion.

✅ When to use
- When you need the same character to appear consistently across multiple clips
- Realistic human motion and facial expressions
- Image-to-video: animating a still photo with natural motion
- Cinematic shots with camera movement (pan, zoom, dolly)
- When Runway's price does not justify the quality for your use case
❌ When NOT to use
- Abstract or stylized video effects — Runway has better style controls
- When you need a complete video editing suite — Kling is generation only
- Privacy-sensitive workflows — data is processed on Chinese servers
💡 Personal Tips
Kling surprised me — character consistency is genuinely better than Runway for human subjects. For a talking-head video or a character appearing across multiple clips, Kling keeps faces recognizable where Runway doesn't. The free tier is very generous for experimentation. My workflow: generate the character reference image in Midjourney, then use Kling image-to-video to animate it. The combination is powerful.
